Marianjoy Medical Director Named IAMA 2005 Distinguished Physician

Dr. Noel Rao, Medical Director at Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital, is the recipient of the 2005 Distinguished Physician Award from the Indian American Medical Association of Illinois. This annual award is presented to a physician of Indian origin who excels in clinical care, research, and education. Dr. Rao has been a member of the Marianjoy staff for over 20 years, serving at one time as Medical Director of both the brain injury and neuromuscular programs at Marianjoy. In his role as Medical Director of Marianjoy, a 120-bed teaching hospital in Wheaton, Illinois, dedicated to the delivery of physical rehabilitative medicine, Dr. Rao also oversees Marianjoy’s residency program.

Dr. Rao is active in research conducted at Marianjoy with 20 publications in referred journals and more than 50 competitive papers presented at national meetings or published in abstract form in referred journals.

In addition, Dr. Rao is a guest examiner at the Oral Board Examination of the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, a member of the editorial board for The Journal of Head Trauma Rehabilitation, and Associate Professor at the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Rush Medical College. He is currently conducting research with a grant from the National Institute of Health.

Radiation Oncologist Receives Weisman Humanitarian Award for Cancer Care

The 6th Annual Stephen A. Weisman, M.D. Humanitarian Award for Cancer Care was presented to Joseph P. Imperato, M.D., FACR by Joyce Weisman, widow of Dr. Weisman, at Cancer Wellness Center’s annual meeting held at the Renaissance Chicago North Shore Hotel. Imperato, who is a radiation oncologist and Medical Director of The Center for Advanced Radiation Medicine at Lake Forest Hospital was nominated by hospital president William Ries. "Patients see him not only as a skilled clinician but also as a caring and compassionate physician serving as a guide in their journey through cancer treatment," said Ries in his nomination. "He routinely provides the personal one-on-one consultation and advice to his patients that is so critical in cancer care – whether or not the patient may be a candidate for radiation treatment."

Acknowledged for his instrumental work in advancing the state of radiation treatment at both Lake Forest Hospital and throughout Lake County, Imperato also is a respected teacher and mentor with a strong commitment to continuing education, always willing to share his knowledge with the medical and professional radiation therapy staff. Besides serving on the Clinical Advisory Board of Cancer Wellness Center, he has held successive leadership positions in the Lake County Unit and past president of the Illinois Division of the American Cancer Society.

Morris Hospital’s Vice President of Patient Care Services Celebrates 40 Years of Service

Carol Harrington has achieved 40 years of service at Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers where she presently serves as Vice President of Patient Care Services.

Over the years, Harrington has served in a variety of positions at Morris Hospital where she began employment as a medical/surgical nurse. Soon after she started working at the hospital, she was asked to teach classes on nursing theory and clinical skills to high school co-op students. On occasion she worked in the obstetrical unit.

She was handling utilization review for the hospital and became medical/surgical nursing supervisor. Her next assignment was in-service educator, which carried the responsibilities of providing orientation to new nurses and nursing assistants and writing the hospital’s first policy and procedure manual. She was appointed Director of Nursing, the top nursing position at the hospital. Over time, she assumed administrative responsibility for other areas of the hospital including radiology, physical therapy, occupational medicine and performance improvement, and was named Vice President of Patient Care Services.

"In an industry like healthcare that continually faces changes and challenges, it’s extremely important for nurses to have someone they can always look to and always count on. For nurses at Morris Hospital, that person is Carol Harrington," says Clifford Corbett, President and CEO of Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers. "Carol has always been a mentor to our nurses and has helped the nursing staff remain cohesive through both challenging times and good times. Many nurses who work at Morris Hospital have never known another leader. Carol is also regarded with great respect by nurses and hospital leaders throughout the healthcare industry," adds Corbett.
